Railways

“The key to effective planning is a comprehensive understanding of our infrastructure, its current condition and an awareness of its likely future condition based upon current maintenance regimes and traffic forecasts.” Network Rail, 2004.

Network Mapping is able to support the rail industry through the provision of topographic mapping for the preliminary and detailed design of new railway routes. The survey information, including bare earth Digital Terrain Models, orthorectified imagery and vector drawings, can be used to optimise the new alignment such that the Bill Of Quantities for the design is reduced and project costs are lowered.

For existing routes we can deliver accurate mapping of the line and the surrounding right of way, for use in applications such as asset mapping, bank stability assessment, infringement analysis, signal sighting and electrification.

New railway route survey

Rapid, accurate, topographic model generation over large areas

Accurate modelling of both the bare earth ground surface and forested areas (vegetation penetration)

Vectorization and attribution of existing features for detailed base mapping

Horizontal and vertical route alignment

High resolution orthorectified imagery for entire survey corridor

Generation of contour models, DTMs, and TINs

Data tied in to local projection and datum where required, or SnakeGrid™

Existing railway maintenance

We are able to integrate track-based LiDAR scan data with our airborne datasets in order to produce an integrated survey dataset. This can be used for;

Track cant and gauge measurements

Height and stagger measurements of electrified overhead lines

Earthen bank stability survey

Tunnel, hard object and vegetation clearance analysis

Condition assessment of tunnels and the underside of bridges

Alignment sheet base mapping

Optimisation of signal sighting
