The company

Network Mapping is a specialist provider of aerial survey and engineering consulting services to electricity transmission clients. The company conducts all data processing and powerline engineering activities in its Yorkshire ‘Technology Centre’, where over 40 staff are housed in a specialist facility. The company provides a range of geospatial, survey and engineering products to clients, working on a diverse range of powerline projects across the UK, US and Middle East. The core technologies used are airborne and ground based LiDAR and imaging, with data feeding into PLS-CADD transmission line design software for subsequent design and analysis.

Position description

The position is responsible for managing the planning, analysis, processing and engineering elements of aerial and terrestrial LiDAR/image transmission line survey projects. These projects are used as the basis for as-built thermal ratings analysis, asset identification and mapping, and new-build route optimisation.

This position is required to conduct technical project scoping from RFP and contract documents, communication with client to confirm project technical specification, scheduling of works and allocation of resources, management of processing and engineering activities, enforcement of quality standards and oversight of project delivery. A key focus will be on the transmission line engineering elements of each project, managing the complex project workflow to ensure the timely provision of high quality transmission line modelling and analysis services.

Generally, 10-15 projects will be in various stages of completion at any point in time so a constant understanding of priorities and resource allocation is required. A very strong understanding of project financial profiles is required in order to ensure decisions reflect the commercial and financial requirements of the business. Strict budgeting control is also needed, controlling local costs and allocating time and spending against projects and initiatives.

Skills, qualifications and experience

The successful applicant should be educated to degree level (or higher) in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline. The position requires a minimum of 6 years’ experience in electrical or mechanical engineering or a related discipline, of which at least 2 years should have been spent in a senior project management role. The position should have a broad working knowledge which may cover some or all of electrical engineering and power transmission systems, project management, aerial surveying, and computer aided design (CAD). In addition, the position should be aware of developments in the electrical transmission engineering and applicable geospatial industries.

The role requires solid project management experience and the ability to convert complex technical specifications into practical project plans and technical assessments. It also requires very strong organisational and professional English communications skills in order to effectively communicate on a range of topics with other senior managers, office, field staff, clients and the company board. The position should be familiar with a number of enterprise level systems such as those that manage documents, projects and customer relationships.
