Project Engineer (Transmission Line)

Location : North Yorkshire, UK

Salary : £23-26k per annum

Closing Date : 23rd of September 2011

The company

Network Mapping is a specialist provider of aerial survey and engineering consulting services to electricity transmission clients. The company conducts all data processing and powerline engineering activities in its Yorkshire ‘Technology Centre’, where over 40 staff are housed in a specialist facility. The company provides a range of geospatial, survey and engineering products to clients, working on a diverse range of powerline projects across the UK, US and Middle East. The core technologies used are airborne and ground based LiDAR and imaging, with data feeding into PLS-CADD transmission line design software for subsequent design and analysis.

Position description

This senior position will form a core part of the Powerline Engineering Group. This team conducts power line engineering design and analysis using Powerline Systems’ PLS-CADD software. The group is primarily concerned with the use of airborne LiDAR and image data to facilitate highly accurate as-build powerline modelling or new line design. It models existing powerlines using a range of techniques and generates reports to provide clients with fundamental operating information and risk management tools for their transmission system. In the case of new-build, it aims to optimise line routing and design using predefined tower structures and conductors.

Skills, qualifications and experience

The successful applicant should be educated to degree level (or higher) in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline. The position requires a minimum of 2 year experience in electrical or mechanical engineering or a related discipline. Experience in PLS-CADD software or computer aided design (CAD) is essential.

The successful applicant must demonstrate practical knowledge and experience in transmission line engineering. The position will be required to design technical workflows and production methods to support power line survey, design and modelling projects. The position is required to analyse and report on all aspects of powerline behaviour and provide detailed technical reports for direct delivery to clients. Of particular importance is the ability to perform structural assessments and route optimisations and produce associated reporting. The position must also be aware of developments in the electrical transmission engineering industry and ensure that work is conducted in compliance with industry standards.

The successful applicant must be a good communicator with strong English skills and the ability to work within a multi-disciplinary project team. The role requires strong attention to detail for the preparation of technical reports in support of transmission line design and analysis projects. Communication with senior management and the clients’ technical specialists will also be required.
