Forestry
Network Mapping can offer a range of products for Foresters, Silviculturalists, Ecologists and Asset Managers.
Penetration
The multiple returns of a LiDAR system allow for the generation of powerful data models giving good characterization of the canopy, sub canopy and ground. LiDAR penetration is possible in all areas where you can see the sky from the ground and is limited only when closed canopy conditions exist. Network Mapping has surveyed forests in a range of continents including South America and Europe.
LiDAR has many advantages over traditional methods for forestry as the multiple returns from a single LASER pulse allow for extensive measurement of the vertical structure of vegetation canopies. Network Mapping operates LiDAR equipment which is capable of 200 thousand pulses per second, with up to four returns recorded for each pulse.

Ground model
Network Mapping can generate a bare earth model of forested areas (right). This allows for investigation of archaeological remains, hydrographic pathways, and soil erosion.

Digital Terrain Model
Using multi return LiDAR systems Network Mapping can generate a model of the forest with good characterisation of canopy height, sub canopy detail and a ground model. This is useful for many applications, including estimating timber volumes, view shed analysis, least destructive path route planning and tree height analysis.
Canopy Height Model
Network Mapping can deliver a model of tree height across the forest. This allows for more efficient forestry identifying larger trees, where traditional spot height measurements may fail to take into account the ground elevation.
Crown Counts
The tree crown count for a forest can be calculated using LiDAR data. This method has varying levels of accuracy; please contact us for more information.
Tree Density
The density of crowns in an area can be calculated using the crown count values to show areas of higher density trees, this may be useful for fire modelling, efficient tree felling, and silviculture.
